The pirate captain Blackie is after the gold of the Spanish viceroy who wants to bring it to Spain. Since it is not possible for him and his crew to attack the heavily guarded transport alone, he joins forces with the pirate captains Skull, De Lusac and Montbart. This coalition is quickly coming to an end when Blackie buys two women captured by Montbart at an audition. In contrast to Montbart, Blackie knows who the women are, the viceroy's wife. When the other buccaneers find out, Blackie has already put the women on his ship. Under the leadership of Captain Skull the other pirates try to get the women back, but Blackie manages to escape. He finally returns the two prisoners to the viceroy for about 50000 doubloons of ransom, but he leaves the women under surveillance, as he suspects that they know something about the forthcoming gold transport. So he finds out that the gold is now to be loaded onto another ship and the big gold transport is just a trick. But the other pirate captains don't know anything about this and decide to attack the gold transport. They overwhelm Blackie's crew on his ship, capture Blackie and steer his ship as a diversionary manoeuvre directly towards the fortified city. Blackie manages to free himself with a few loyal henchmen and takes control of Skull's ship. He can also save his crew from the doomed ship, but his ship is lost. Now he has to hurry, as the actual transport of gold is about to set sail. Blackie knows where the transport starts and heads for this point with Skull's ship. In order to make it in time, he's got all the balast thrown off the ship, including the cannons. Then the decisive battle for gold starts. Blackie the Pirate is a real pirate movie and therefore not comparable with the typical Spencer/Hill comedies. Blackie the Pirate is the only Spencer/Hill movie in which Bud and Terence meet as rivals. Blackie the Pirate is the only movie in Bud Spencer's career where he dies the movie death. The original title of the movie is "Il corsaro nero", which translates as "The Black Corsair". "The Black Corsair" is a famous pirate novel by Sandokan creator Emilio Salgari. Except for the title, the film has nothing in common with the book. The soundtrack of the film was written by Gino Peguri. Sometimes there is a confusion about it, because there is a soundtrack with the same name by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis. But this soundtrack is part of the 1976 pirate film with the same name, which is actually based on the novel by Emilio Salgari. The film was made directly after They call me Trinity, even before it was clear what success this would have. Directly after "Blackie" Bud and Terence made the Trinity sequel They still call me Trinity and the typical Spencer/Hill style was born. In the role of Martel, a friend of Hill's Blackie, Salvatore Borgese can be seen. It is Borgese's first appearance in the Spencer/Hill universe, which was to be followed by seven more, including the role of Anulu in Who finds a friend finds a treasure and those of Ninfus in Odds and evens.
